Book Launch: Complete Checklist for Authors

Launching a book is not simply putting it up for sale and waiting. A successful launch is a planned event that concentrates attention, sales, and reviews into a short window of time, giving your book the initial momentum it needs to gain traction.

This guide provides a complete checklist divided into three phases: pre-launch, launch day, and post-launch. Check off each step as you complete it and you will reach your launch day with confidence.

Phase 1: Pre-launch (8-12 weeks before)

This is the preparation phase. Everything you do here will determine the success of your launch day. Do not rush it.

Confirm that professional editing is complete and approved. Do not launch a book that has not gone through at least copyediting and proofreading.

Approve the final cover and interior design. Verify that the cover looks great both at full size and as a thumbnail (how it appears on Amazon).

Obtain the ISBN and assign the correct categories for your book.

Write the book synopsis or description. This is your most important sales tool. Spend time on it: it must spark curiosity and clearly convey the book's value.

Prepare the author bio with a professional photo. Readers want to know who you are and why you wrote this book.

Create the book's page on Amazon (KDP) or another platform. Set everything up but do not publish yet.

Send advance copies to 15-25 beta readers, pastors, thought leaders, and potential reviewers.

Create social media graphics: at least 10 different images (book quotes, cover reveal, countdown, testimonials).

Prepare an email sequence for your subscriber list: announcement, reminder, launch day, follow-up.

Plan the launch event (in-person, virtual, or both) with the date, venue, invitations, and logistics.

Set the sale price considering production costs, competition, and your goals.

Create a landing page or dedicated website for the book with a purchase link, description, and testimonials.

Phase 2: Launch week

Launch week is a communication sprint. Your goal is to get as many people as possible to buy your book and leave reviews in the first few days. Amazon's algorithm favors books with concentrated sales in a short period of time.

Publish the book on all confirmed platforms (Amazon, your website, distributors).

Send the launch email to your entire subscriber list with a direct purchase link.

Post on all your social media channels on launch day. Post multiple times throughout the day, not just once.

Personally contact the 15-25 people who received advance copies and ask them to post their review on Amazon today.

Hold the launch event (presentation, book signing, live stream).

Ask friends, family, and your community to share your launch post on their own networks.

Respond to every comment, message, and congratulation. Engagement increases the reach of your posts.

If you have the budget, run a Facebook/Instagram ad campaign targeting your ideal audience.

Phase 3: Post-launch (weeks 2-8)

Many authors make the mistake of stopping promotion after the first week. The post-launch phase is where sustained sales are built.

Continue posting content related to your book on social media at least 2-3 times a week.

Share every new review you receive. Reviews are powerful social proof.

Seek interview opportunities on podcasts, radio shows, and blogs related to your topic.

Offer reading sessions or workshops at churches, schools, and community groups.

Send a follow-up email to your list with updates: reviews received, upcoming events, impact stories.

Analyze your metrics: which posts generated the most sales, which channels performed best, where to invest more time.

Consider a special offer or limited-time promotion to drive a second wave of sales.

Start thinking about your next book. Authors with a catalog sell more than single-book authors.

The secret ingredient: consistency

The perfect launch does not exist. What does exist is a well-prepared launch. Some books take off immediately; others build their audience gradually over months. The important thing is not to give up. Every social media post, every event, every conversation about your book is a seed. Some will bear fruit immediately; others, months later. Your job is to keep planting.
