Selling Books on Amazon: A Guide for Christian Authors

Amazon controls over 50% of the book market in the United States and is the largest book-selling platform in the Spanish-speaking world. If you want your book to reach as many readers as possible, you need to be on Amazon, and you need to do it right.

This guide explains how Amazon KDP works, how to optimize your listing to sell more, and the mistakes you must avoid so your book does not get lost among the millions of available titles.

What is Amazon KDP?

KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) is Amazon's self-publishing platform. It allows you to publish both Kindle (ebook) format books and print-on-demand books (paperback and hardcover). You do not need inventory: Amazon prints each book when someone buys it and ships it directly to the buyer.

Publishing on KDP is free. Amazon makes money by taking a percentage of each sale: approximately 30-40% for ebooks and 40-60% for printed books (including the printing cost). You receive the remaining royalties deposited monthly into your bank account.

How to publish your book on KDP: step by step

1

Create your KDP account

Visit kdp.amazon.com and sign up with your Amazon account or create a new one. You will need tax information (in the U.S., your SSN or EIN; for international authors, your local tax information) and bank details to receive payments.

2

Upload your manuscript

KDP accepts files in Word (.docx), PDF, EPUB, and KPF (Kindle Package Format). For the ebook, EPUB format delivers the best results. For the print book, a PDF with correct margins and bleed is essential.

3

Upload your cover

KDP requires the cover in PDF format for print books (including front cover, spine, and back cover) and JPG/TIFF for ebooks. The exact dimensions depend on the number of pages and the book's trim size.

4

Configure the book details

Title, subtitle, author name, description, categories (you can choose up to 3), and 7 keywords. Each of these fields directly affects your book's visibility on Amazon.

5

Set the price and publish

Choose your price and royalty plan (35% or 70% for ebooks). For print books, KDP calculates the minimum price based on printing costs. Review the preview, confirm everything, and publish.

How to optimize your Amazon listing

Publishing your book is just the first step. For readers to find it, you need to optimize every element of your product page:

Strategic title and subtitle

Your title should be memorable and your subtitle should include keywords that readers would search for. For example: 'Roots of Faith: A Practical Guide to Strengthening Your Daily Devotional Life.' The subtitle helps Amazon's algorithm show your book in relevant searches.

Persuasive HTML-formatted description

Amazon allows basic HTML in the description (bold, italics, lists). Use this to your advantage. Start with an emotional hook, describe the book's value, state who it is for, and end with a call to action. Do not write a summary; write sales copy.

Precise categories

Choose the most specific categories possible. 'Religion & Spirituality > Christianity > Christian Living > Devotionals' is better than simply 'Religion.' In smaller categories it is easier to achieve bestseller status.

Relevant keywords

You have 7 keyword fields. Use phrases your readers would search for: 'Christian devotional,' 'daily prayer book,' 'Bible study for women.' Do not repeat words that are already in the title.

Look Inside feature

Make sure the first few pages of your book are impeccable. Amazon allows buyers to browse your book before purchasing. If the table of contents, introduction, and opening pages are strong, conversion rates increase significantly.

Common mistakes when selling on Amazon

A cover that cannot compete visually

Your cover appears as a small thumbnail alongside books from major publishers. If it looks amateur in comparison, buyers will scroll past no matter how good your content is.

Weak or summary-style description

The description is not an academic summary. It is sales copy. It should generate emotion, curiosity, and urgency. Many authors write boring descriptions that fail to convert visits into purchases.

Not actively requesting reviews

Reviews do not come on their own. You need to ask your readers to leave their opinion on Amazon. Books with fewer than 10 reviews have significantly less visibility on the platform.

Choosing overly broad categories

In the general 'Religion' category you compete against millions of books. In 'Christian Living > Devotionals' you compete against hundreds. Specific categories give you more visibility opportunities.
